Joyful Confidence

In his letter to the Philippians, Paul expresses immense joy in their gospel partnership with one another. He writes, “I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” (Phil. 1:3-6) His confidence is rooted, in part, in the knowledge that the church in Philippi is from start to finish God’s work. It’s staggering that by his grace God begins this amazing work in the life of a Christian: his power is at work within us, energizing, initiating new life! And what’s more, when God sets out to do something, he doesn’t leave it unfinished. When he begins a work in a Christian’s life and in a church family, he ensures that that group of Christians will make it through to the great day of Jesus’ return! God enables us to see and delight in the wonder and beauty of Christ the Lord, to depend on him by faith for our righteousness. His divine power and authority guarantees that having started, he’ll carry you to the end – that’s some assurance! So we ought to be filled with grateful praise and thanks to God, to burst with joy as we reflect on his work in and among us! More, it encourages to press on in continued dependence on him.

Taking Off

The start of the year in student ministry is relentless. There are countless new opportunities about, but there is also much planning, organizing and preparation in the background. It’s a joy to reconnect with returning students and to labor together to get our various groups up and running again. Our small group Bible Studies continue to be the heartbeat of our work. Please be praying for our many student leaders, volunteers and staff who’ll be restarting some groups and establishing new ones. Pray that our core returning students will be hungry to be back in fellowship around God’s word after a long break.

This past week has been the orientation week at Wits. Praise God for all the new contacts that were made and pray for our follow up over the weeks ahead. Societies weeks at the various UJ campuses will follow in the next couple of weeks. Do similarly pray for good opportunities. In particular, pray for us as we seek to establish a presence at the UJ Soweto Campus. Pray too for ease of access to campuses and residences that can sometimes be difficult to get into.

Pray on for our staff whose role is to equip students for ministry, for joy and hope as they pour themselves out, and for perseverance in the face of setbacks.

Equip 2019

We’re very excited as we look forward to Equip 2019 (our FOCUS Leaders Weekend Away) in a weeks time! Over 90 student leaders, volunteers and staff have been invited. Pray that almost all are able to attend and are eagerly anticipating the time away together! Pray that it’s a fruitful and encouraging time for us. Our desire is to see God’s purpose for our world captivating us and shaping our lives more and more, and that we really are better equipped to serve him in the mundane, everyday moments.
